Our Mission
To elevate public understanding of Virginia politics and government by organizing and presenting information in ways that are easily accessible to all and free of partisan bias.

Our Vision
To be the most reliable and accessible source of nonpartisan information fostering a well-informed public and trusted by people of all political beliefs.

Our Impact
Our unique nonpartisan approach is supported by both Republicans and Democrats, and our Board of Directors includes an equal number of members from each party. Our work has been recognized with awards from various organizations, including the Virginia Coalition for Open Government, the Wilder School of Public Policy at VCU, and the Society of Professional Journalists.

About Us
The Virginia Public Access Project (VPAP) was established in 1997 to provide Virginians with access to public documents related to the financial aspects of politics. Over the years, VPAP has expanded its services to include access to state and local government information, data visualizations, election night results and analysis, lobbyist registrations and disclosures, General Assembly member demographics, and legislative votes and analysis. Additionally, VPAP offers VaNews, a daily aggregation of state and local political and government news. Recently, VPAP has also begun providing resources for civics education across the Commonwealth.

VPAP strives to remain relevant to political leaders, governmental officials, lobbyists, and campaign staff while ensuring that our data is accessible to everyday citizens who seek knowledge to make informed choices at the ballot box and beyond.

We are committed to presenting information in a nonpartisan manner. This commitment enables citizens to access the information necessary to make decisions that reflect their values.

The driving force behind its formation was Joy Manufacturing HR Manager Allen Dougherty. A core group of around 20 HR professionals from all across SWVA worked very hard to get the chapter going, with mining related HR folks, healthcare, manufacturing, and small business represented.

Our group seeks to provide area human resource professionals as well as local business leaders with useful information, education, and energizing discussions related to the HR field.

For more information about the current programs the Southwest Virginia chapter of the Society of Human Resource Management is offering, visit our website.

The Southwest Virginia Workforce Development Board is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization that provides oversight and governance for Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) programs in Local Workforce Development Area One, also known as the Southwest Region. The Southwest Region is composed of eight jurisdictions in far Southwestern Virginia (counties of Buchanan, Dickenson, Lee, Russell, Scott, Tazewell, Wise, and the city of Norton.

The Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) was signed into law on July 22, 2014. WIOA is designed to help job seekers access employment, education, training, and supportive services to succeed in the labor market as well as to match employers with the skilled workers they need to compete in the global economy. The Southwest Virginia Workforce Development Board is the recipient of these Federal funds and administers the programs through SWVA Works. The Adult program is targeted toward low-income adults with barriers to employment while the Dislocated Worker program assists workers who have been laid off or have been notified that they will be laid off. The WIOA Title I Youth Program provides services to disconnected youth, ages 16-24, who face barriers to employment. Programs help to provide strong linkages between academic and occupational learning in order to provide a new workforce “supply pipeline” that employers need to fill their job vacancies in the future.
